Aphid Control using Green Lacewings
Aphid Control using Green Lacewings

Lacewing larvae are extremely voracious hunters. They prefer to eat aphids, but will also eat many other soft-bodied pests, including immature scale insects, whiteflies, and some insect eggs. Their larval stage lasts approximately 15-20 days, and they live as adults for less than 2 months. Ideal conditions for these insects would be between 67 and 89 degrees F, with relative humidity of 30% or greater, although they can live and control aphids in a wide variety of conditions. Cooler temperatures will slow their reproduction and development. Eggs are the most economical. They are packed in rice-hulls to make distribution easy. Larvae are the fastest-working form of these insects. They are cannibalistic, and therefore are packed in a frame made up of small compartments that can be opened a few at a time to release the predators. Although it is extremely rare, the larvae can give humans a painful bite. Adult lacewings are nomadic, and are excellent for treetop applications. The females seek out aphid colonies and lay up to 200 eggs in the middle of them. They are noctural in all stages of life. Ants should be controlled for lacewings to be effective, since they will eat lacewing eggs, and they will also defend aphids from lacewing larvae.
