| King County will hold its second-annual free Earth Day Expo on Friday, 9:45 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Seattle's Westlake Park, at Fourth Avenue and Pine Street.
Worm bins and educational booths will be part of the event, showcasing environmentally friendly programs, services and products.
King County Executive Ron Sims will make Green Globe Award presentations at 11 a.m. to more than a dozen businesses and individuals in recognition of their achievement in environmental stewardship.
More than a dozen exhibitors will provide samples of "green" products and services, including recycled content products, and reclaimed and salvaged materials. Participating organizations include the Environmental Protection Agency, King County Metro Transit and the Department of Natural Resources and Parks.
Information about more Earth Day activities in King County is posted at www.dnr.metrokc.gov/dnrp/pa/earthday, or call 206-296-1980.
• EarthCorps volunteers and others will hold a work party at Seward Park on Friday to build trails, weed and clean up the Lake Washington shoreline. Volunteers plan to meet at 5902 Lake Washington Blvd. S. The work party is planned from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Healthy kids
Fourteen YMCA branches around King County, including branches in downtown Seattle and Bellevue and in urban neighborhoods, will be open Saturday for the Y's free Healthy Kids Day, including games and other activities. Events will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at most locations. Information: 206-382-5003.
Zoo parking meetings
Woodland Park Zoo will hold two public meetings — one at 5 p.m. today — on proposals for a residential-parking zone at the zoo.
A long-range zoo plan adopted by the Seattle City Council last fall provided for a new parking garage on the west side of the zoo, off Phinney Avenue North, by 2008. A residential-parking zone could help regulate parking by zoo visitors, employees and volunteers in the surrounding neighborhoods, as well as anyone else who might park near the zoo during the day.
Today's meeting will be at the zoo's Education Center at the South Gate at North 50th Street and Fremont Avenue North. Parking will be free in the zoo's south lot.
The second meeting will be at 5 p.m. tomorrow in the same location.
On the calendar
The National Coalition Building Institute's Seattle chapter will host a daylong workshop on "Effective Communication Skills" on May 10 at the Safeco Jackson Street Center, 23rd Avenue and South Jackson Street. Registration and fee information is available at www.scn.org/ncbisea/ (click on Calendar of Events), or call 206-323-5427.
The institute's local team of leaders has offered community workshops for more than a decade.
